ph3Position Context /h3 pThe Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is part of NATO's Science and Technology Organization and focuses on maritime domain science technology solutions for defence and security. The role is within the Research Division’s Autonomous Naval Mine Warfare (ANMW) team. /p h3Principal Duties /h3 ul liSupport the ANMW programme of work in developing innovative research ideas in naval mine warfare, seabed warfare and drone warfare. /li liDesign, develop, implement and validate state‑of‑the‑art autonomy algorithms for uncrewed underwater, surface and air vehicles. /li liDevelop rigorous mathematical models for advanced autonomy algorithms and assess their performance. /li liCollaborate with researchers and domain experts to identify research questions, design experiments, and evaluate results. /li liConduct and document theoretical and experimental investigations as part of maritime research projects. /li liStay current with advancements in autonomy, robotics and related fields and apply relevant methodologies to projects. /li liParticipate in interdisciplinary research teams, contribute to research proposals and publications, and present findings at conferences and workshops. /li liSupport the organization and execution of NATO workshops and conferences, and develop proposals for external funding. /li /ul h3Special Requirements and Additional Duties /h3 ul liFlexibility to perform additional related duties as directed. /li liPotential deployment aboard CMRE or chartered vessels and undertaking temporary duty assignments within and outside NATO boundaries. /li liMust hold a fit‑for‑sea certificate in line with IMO and ILO standards. /li /ul h3Essential Qualifications /h3 ul libProfessional experience /b:
ul liStrong background in autonomous navigation, mapping, perception, autonomous behaviours, and/or AI‑driven autonomy. /li liDegree in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or related field. /li liEvidence of high‑quality scientific research in robotics with a significant publication record. /li liExperience with scientific programming using Linux, MATLAB, Python and other standard tools. /li liExperience in multi‑disciplinary scientific project work and in the execution and submission of scientific projects. /li /ul /li libEducation/Training /b: ul liMSc in a recognised scientific or engineering field with at least 3 years post‑MSc experience focused on physics, acoustics or signal processing; or /li liPhD in physics, engineering, applied mathematics or related field with training in ocean acoustics. /li /ul /li libLanguage requirements /b: Thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken; English proficiency (SLP 3333). Most work is conducted in English. /li /ul h3Desirable Qualifications /h3 ul liKnowledge of autonomous maritime vehicles, robotics, perception, tracking, target recognition, human‑machine interfaces, navigation, signal and image processing, modelling, simulation, and acoustic sensors.
/li liAdvanced programming skills in C++ or other high‑performance embedded languages. /li liRecent first‑author publications in underwater robotics and/or autonomy. /li liExperience with robotics middleware such as ROS or ROS 2. /li liExperience with collaborative robotics architectures and algorithms. /li liExperience in control and systems theory. /li liExperience with AI applied to robotics. /li liExperience working in an international organization. /li liPublicly documented personal motivation projects. /li /ul h3Attributes and Competencies /h3 ul liExcellent written and oral communication skills. /li liStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to solicit input from others. /li liInnovative, driven, and able to think outside the box. /li liGood time‑management and organizational skills. /li liAgrile and resilient in a changing research environment. /li /ul h3Working Conditions /h3 pThe duties may be performed in an office, laboratory, workshop, or on‑board CMRE vessels.
