Position Context
The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is part of NATO's Science and Technology Organization and focuses on maritime domain science & technology solutions for defence and security. The role is within the Research Division's Autonomous Naval Mine Warfare (ANMW) team.
Principal Duties
Support the ANMW programme of work in developing innovative research ideas in naval mine warfare, seabed warfare and drone warfare.
Design, develop, implement and validate state‐of‐the‐art autonomy algorithms for uncrewed underwater, surface and air vehicles.
Develop rigorous mathematical models for advanced autonomy algorithms and assess their performance.
Collaborate with researchers and domain experts to identify research questions, design experiments, and evaluate results.
Conduct and document theoretical and experimental investigations as part of maritime research projects.
Stay current with advancements in autonomy, robotics and related fields and apply relevant methodologies to projects.
Participate in interdisciplinary research teams,
contribute to research proposals and publications, and present findings at conferences and workshops.
Support the organization and execution of NATO workshops and conferences, and develop proposals for external funding.
Special Requirements and Additional Duties
Flexibility to perform additional related duties as directed.
Potential deployment aboard CMRE or chartered vessels and undertaking temporary duty assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.
Must hold a fit‐for‐sea certificate in line with IMO and ILO standards.
Essential Qualifications
Professional experience :
Strong background in autonomous navigation, mapping, perception, autonomous behaviours, and/or AI‐driven autonomy.
Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or related field.
Evidence of high‐quality scientific research in robotics with a significant publication record.
