Role Overview We are seeking a skilled Mechanical (HVAC & Chillers) Shift Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimisation of HVAC and chilled water systems. The successful candidate will ensure the reliability and efficiency of chillers, cooling systems, pumps, AHUs, FCUs, and associated mechanical infrastructure while maintaining compliance with safety and industry standards.
You will work a 12‑hour continental shift pattern over a 24/7 rota.
Responsibilities Providing a customer focused service and a high standard of planned preventative and reactive maintenance.
Proactively involved in the ongoing technical evaluation of all plant and equipment, suggesting improvements where appropriate.
Accurately recording and reporting maintenance activity to ensure the Key Source System is correctly updated.
Carrying out operational and maintenance activities as directed, ensuring work is executed in a safe and suitable manner.
Ensuring timely completion of planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive work to service level agreements (SLA).
Being the High Voltage Authorized Person & performing all associated duties, including management of the inspection & testing programme.
Supervising all operational and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with SLAs and safe execution.
Supporting the Shift Engineering Team to ensure correct operation of critical services in the Data Centers.
Securing site sign‑off for works to take place and accepting successful completion, ensuring all RA, MS and other technical sign‑off is in place prior to allowing works to proceed.
Ensuring all services are delivered to the highest technical standards, minimising risk.
Ensuring services are delivered in accordance with site and best practice processes and procedures.
Essential Qualifications Several years of experience working with HVAC and chiller systems in commercial, industrial, or data centre environments.
Strong knowledge of chillers (air‑cooled and water‑cooled), chilled water systems, cooling towers, AHUs, FCUs, and ventilation systems.
Experience in fault finding, maintenance planning, and performance optimisation.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs.;
Familiarity with BMS (Building Management Systems) and energy efficiency practices.
Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Strong problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Experience in critical environments such as data centres or manufacturing facilities.
F‑Gas certification or relevant HVAC qualifications.
NVQ / City & Guilds in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (Level 2 or 3).
Knowledge of predictive and preventative maintenance methodologies.
Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for HVAC systems.
Strong relationship building and effective communication skills at all levels.
Willingness to undergo full security checks to BS7858:2019 standard.
Desired Qualifications Additional experience in data centre or critical industrial environments.
Additional HVAC certifications or advanced industry qualifications.
Demonstrated experience with predictive maintenance tools and data analytics.
