About the Role:
Nature Genetics
is a leading scientific journal that publishes the very highest quality research in genetics and genomics. Current emphasis is on the genetic basis for common and complex diseases and on the functional mechanism, architecture and evolution of gene networks, studied by experimental perturbation.
Nature Genetics
is looking for an Associate or Senior Editor to join the editorial team and cover the broad area of cancer research.
Members of the editorial team participate in all aspects of the editorial process including manuscript selection and managing the peer review process, commissioning Reviews, Comments and News & Views articles, and writing for the journal.
Nature Genetics
editors also organize and attend conferences, visit laboratories, and maintain close contact with the international scientific community.
For external candidates, the position will be based in the Springer Nature offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Madrid, Milan, or Pune. For internal candidates, the position may be based in the candidate's current editorial office.
Role responsibilities:
Critically evaluate research manuscripts and make initial editorial decisions - Scientific Comprehension, Manuscript Assessment
Select and engage with peer reviewers, interpret their advice to make post-peer-review editorial decisions - Decision Quality, Critical Scientific Evaluation
Help prospective authors to deal with the reviewers' feedback and streamline the manuscript revision process – Collaboration, Critical Scientific Evaluation
Ensure that all relevant stakeholders (e.g. authors, reviewers) comply with the best professional, scientific and ethical practices, upholding both internal and external policies – Collaboration, Interpersonal Awareness
Work closely with the chief editor and all members of the editorial team to make sound decisions, develop and help execute the journal's annual strategic plan, and contribute to achieving the journal's goals – Collaboration, Interpersonal Awareness, Critical Scientific Evaluation
Make timely decisions on manuscripts and adhere to internal processing deadlines - Being Resilient, Operational Excellence
Work and foster relationships with members of Springer Nature at different teams beyond Nature Genetics, namely at other journals, production team, etc. - Collaboration
Write front-half pieces for the journal such as Editorials, Research Highlights, etc. and edit research manuscripts - Scientific & Academic Writing
Select and participate in, and potentially co-organize, international scientific meetings and conferences that are relevant to the journal's scope – Collaboration, Interpersonal Awareness
Engage with the global scientific community through institutional and laboratory visits – Collaboration, Interpersonal Awareness
Be promptly responsive to requests from authors, reviewers,
and colleagues - Communicates Effectively, Operational Excellence
Adhere to and help improve internal pipelines and editorial processes and policies - Operational Excellence
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential
Ph.D. in cancer research or oncology, or a Ph.D. in biomedical research followed by postdoctoral experience in cancer research
Broad interest in science and in-depth knowledge about the field of cancer research
Ability to understand and critically evaluate research relevant to the broad cancer research areas covered by the journal
Fluency in spoken and written English
Proven ability in scientific and academic writing
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build both internal and external relationships
Eagerness to learn new fields and engage with the scientific community
Willingness and proven ability to work in a fast-paced, target-driven environment
Detail-, time-, and quality-oriented, strong organizational and prioritization skills
Basic understanding of publishing workflows and systems

Expertise in bioinformatics
Postdoctoral experience
Editorial experience
Full training will be given, but candidates with editorial experience may be considered for a Senior Editor position.
