Organisation/Company Politecnico di Torino Department Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (DIMEAS) Research Field Engineering » Mechanical engineering Researcher Profile First Stage Researcher (R1) Positions PhD Positions Application Deadline 31 Aug 2026 - 23:59 (Europe/Rome) Country Italy Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 40 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme?
Horizon
Europe - MSCA Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number 101312790 Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No
Offer Description Objectives : The Project aims to: a) Investigate the Effect of Defects (EoD) on the residual static strength and fatigue life of composite materials subjected to Low Velocity Impact (LVI) damage at ambient and low temperatures (-50 °C); b) helping develop a methodology to determine the corresponding probabilistic Knock-Down Factors (KDFs); c) to validate an existing high fidelity modelling approach for LVI and residual strength in the presence of defects.
During the research activity, the student will fabricate specimens with artificially embedded defects and characterise them using Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques, assessing their LVI-induced damage, the quasi-static residual strength, the fatigue life and low-temperature response. Moreover, the objective is also to validate Finite Element (FE) models using real defect geometries and define defect-specific probabilistic KDFs for residual strength and fatigue allowables.
Expected Results : An extensive data set (including pre- and post-LVI segmented CT images) of experimentally characterised coupons with embedded meso-/macro-scale defects; A validated High Fidelity FE modelling approach for LVI and residual strength; Methods and tools to obtain defect-specific KDFs for the residual static strength and fatigue life of composite laminates subjected to LVI.
Secondments : The project will involve collaborations and secondments (in total 6 months during the three years) at INEGI (Portugal), Universität De Girona (Spain), and Instron (Italy).
The DC will be expected to:
Carry out research as outlined in the project's objectives under the supervision of Professors A. Tridello and D.S. Paolino (PoliTo).
Develop expertise in the advanced characterisation of composite materials and generate an extensive dataset describing the mechanical response of composites containing embedded meso- and macro-scale defects;
Validate FE modelling approach for LVI and residual strength;
Develop methods and tools to obtain defect-specific KDFs for the residual static strength and fatigue life of composite laminates subjected to LVI.
Attend advanced third-level courses and complete the required Hard and Soft Skills credits (at least 100 hours of hard skills and 40 hours of soft skills).
Contribute to academic publications, project reports, and other dissemination activities.
Collaborate with fellow doctoral candidates within the LEGEND project, utilising synergies between projects.
Actively participate in General Assembly meetings and doctoral training events within LEGEND, distributed across Europe.
