Background and purpose of the assignmentthis position is located in the legal office (leg) of the world food programme's headquarters in rome, italy. the legal consultant will be assigned to the contractual & constitutional law branch (legc) and will support a range of legal activities, including providing legal assistance to the regional office for latin america and the caribbean (lacro) and its country offices.accountabilities / responsibilitiesprovide legal advice to lacro and its country offices on a wide variety of issues and to other hq-led or cross-regional initiatives.undertake extensive legal research and analysis and handle complex multidisciplinary legal matters.review and draft contracts with public and private entities, including agreements with un entities, governments, and service providers.prepare legal opinions, reports, memoranda and official correspondence on the interpretation and application of wfp regulations, policies and applicable conventions.participate in preparing, pursuing, negotiating and settling claims and disputes with public and private entities.identify potential liabilities and assist in managing risks in wfp activities.assist in providing legal advice on administrative decisions and represent wfp in tribunals or administrative proceedings.support senior legal officers in servicing committees, task forces,
expert working groups and other bodies.undertake field missions and conduct outreach activities through trainings and briefings to regional, country offices and hq stakeholders.other duties as required.qualifications / experience requiredadvanced university degree in law or equivalent with advanced training in private, commercial and public international law.qualified to practice law or admitted to a national or state bar, or equivalent professional legal practice experience.minimum five years post-graduate experience in law or provision of legal services.strong knowledge of legal principles, research sources, and ability to draft legal documents.business acumen, strong time-management, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.ability to work independently and inform supervisors of significant developments.languagesfluency (c level) in english and spanish (required).intermediate knowledge (b level) of french or another official wfp language (arabic, portuguese, chinese, russian) is an asset.other informationcontract type: to be defined.location: rome, italy.compensation package as per un terms.benefits include personal and professional development, training, accreditation, coaching, mentorship, internal mobility opportunities.
