Hands-on Technical Lead - AI SaaS startup About us
MemorAIz is an early-stage startup that designs and builds customizable AI modules and AI assistants for organizations operating in the education, culture, publishing, and social impact sectors.
Our work focuses on helping teams activate and scale their knowledge through AI systems that are reliable, understandable, and adaptable to real operational contexts. We are based in Bologna, within AlmaCube, a leading innovation hub, and we are currently scaling both our product offering and our engineering team. We are already working with real clients and revenue-generating projects, and we are now entering a phase where technical and architectural decisions will directly shape the long-term evolution of our products.
Role overview
We are looking for a hands-on Technical Lead who wants to actively contribute to building and evolving our technical foundations, while supporting the growth of a small but highly motivated engineering team.
This role combines technical leadership, architectural thinking, and direct contribution to production code. It is well suited for someone who enjoys working close to the product, collaborating with founders, and taking ownership in a fast-moving startup environment. Responsibilities In this role, you will:
Design and evolve system architectures that support multiple AI-driven products over time
Define shared patterns and abstractions that can be reused across different projects and client contexts
Contribute regularly to production code across backend and frontend, focusing on high-impact areas
Make pragmatic technical decisions that balance delivery speed, system quality, and long-term maintainability
Review code with attention to clarity, security, and overall system health
Identify and address technical debt without blocking product development
Support and mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions
Collaborate closely with the CTO and product stakeholders on architectural and technical direction
Help the team use AI-assisted development tools effectively, while maintaining a critical and thoughtful approach Qualifications
We believe this role could be a good fit if you have:
At least 5 years of professional experience as a software engineer
Experience working in an early-stage or scaling SaaS or product-driven company (for example as engineer #3–15)
Strong backend fundamentals and experience designing systems that evolve over time
Familiarity with multi-tenant or multi-client architectures A pragmatic mindset and comfort working with real-world constraints and trade-offs The ability to combine hands-on development with technical leadership responsibilities A thoughtful and critical perspective on the use of AI coding tools
Additional experience that is appreciated but not required includes:
experience with AI or ML systems in production, close collaboration between product and engineering, or spec-driven and design-first development approaches. What we require
While we offer a flexible hybrid setup, we prioritize candidates who can work on-site in Bologna 1–2 days per week at our office in AlmaCube (with flexibility in case of need).
We believe that regular in-person time helps strengthen collaboration, alignment, and shared ownership within the team, especially at this stage of the company’s growth. What we offer
Competitive compensation, including meaningful equity aligned with seniority and impact
Real ownership over technical decisions and product evolution
Opportunities for professional growth in a small, motivated team Hiring process The hiring process consists of two interviews:
An initial conversation with the CTO A technical and architectural discussion An optional final step may include a 1–2 day paid working session with the team, ideally in person in Bologna at AlmaCube. This session is fully paid. Remote participation is considered only in exceptional cases. If you’re curious about the work we’re doing and think you could contribute to it, we encourage you to apply!
