Blue Oak Consulting
This Data Analyst - Intern position is designed for an entry level professional who wants to understand the mechanics of commercial decision making. Working in a fully remote capacity, you will support our firm as we assist our partner, who is a major provider of industrial logistics solutions, in evaluating their portfolio economics and capital allocation strategies.
About Blue Oak
Consulting
Blue Oak Consulting provides independent advisory on pricing, portfolio economics, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. We are not a traditional consulting firm focused on broad transformation programs or high level strategy decks. Instead, we interrogate specific commercial decisions where the financial stakes are high and the existing narrative is not sufficient. Our team looks past corporate language and P&L; complexity to identify where value is leaking or capital is trapped.
We work across sectors like software, manufacturing, and healthcare to test whether the assumptions behind a growth plan or an acquisition actually hold under pressure. We are a small, principal led firm where the people who do the work are the ones accountable for the results. We do not take transaction contingent fees, which allows us to be completely honest about whether the economics of a decision make sense. Our goal is to provide clarity through financial discipline and a healthy amount of skepticism.
The Role
In this role, you will be a core part of our investigative process. As a remote intern, you will spend your time digging into raw data to find the logic, or the lack thereof, in financial cases.
This is not a role about making pretty slides:
it is about finding the truth within the numbers. You will work closely with our principals to test the validity of commercial assumptions and identify where real world friction might cause a financial model to fail. We value accuracy over speed and clear thinking over corporate jargon.
What You Will Be
Doing
Cleaning and organizing large, messy datasets from various client sources to prepare them for analysis.
Testing the sensitivity of financial models to changes in pricing and volume assumptions.
Identifying trends in transaction data that contradict the established corporate narrative.
Assisting principals in building and maintaining financial models that track capital allocation.
Creating clear, straightforward visualizations that show where value is being created or lost.
Reviewing historical data to see if past acquisition assumptions were actually met in practice.
Documenting the steps taken during analysis to ensure all findings are reproducible and accurate.
Participating in internal team discussions to challenge the findings and refine our advice.
What You
Bring A current student or recent graduate with a degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related field.
Strong foundational skills in Microsoft Excel, including comfort with complex formulas and data organization.
A naturally skeptical and curious mindset that leads you to look under the hood of every financial claim.
The ability to manage your own time and stay productive in a fully remote work setting.
High attention to detail, especially when working with large volumes of numerical information.
Basic familiarity with data analysis tools or a strong willingness to learn our specific methods.
Clear written communication skills and the ability to explain technical findings in plain English.
What We
Offer A paid internship with a competitive and attractive rate for the current market and role.
The ability to work from anywhere in a fully remote environment.
Direct access to and mentorship from the principals of the firm.
Practical, hands on experience with high stakes financial advisory work.
An environment that prioritizes analytical rigor and honest reporting over internal politics.
Exposure to various industries and complex commercial problems that go beyond textbook theory. We stay through the execution phase of our projects because decisions that look sound in theory often fail when they meet real world friction. As an intern at Blue Oak Consulting, you are learning how to bridge that gap.
We believe that by providing clarity through financial discipline, we help our clients make better choices. This position is an opportunity to build a career based on evidence, skepticism, and a commitment to understanding how value is truly generated in a business.
