Offer Description
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network TRILOGY, an international training programme in ultrafast science, attosecond physics, and photonics.

TRILOGY trains 14 doctoral candidates across leading European universities, research institutes, and industrial partners. The programme provides an interdisciplinary research environment combining advanced experimental research, theoretical collaboration, international secondments, and structured training in transferable skills. The candidate will be enrolled in a recognized PhD programme and supervised by internationally leading researchers.

The TRILOGY network focuses on ultrafast chirality and attosecond electron dynamics, aiming to develop new methods for probing and controlling chiral light–matter interactions with applications in photonics, biosensing, and materials science.

Project title: Generation of chiral light in nano-devices for optical probes of chiral biomarkers (WP3)

This PhD project focuses on the development of integrated photonic and waveguide–microfluidic devices for generating and controlling ultrafast structured chiral light.





The goal is to enable sensitive all-optical detection of chiral molecules and biomarkers using nonlinear optical spectroscopy. The research combines ultrafast laser physics, nanophotonic device development, and high-order harmonic generation/XUV spectroscopy.

The project is part of Work Package 3 of TRILOGY, which aims to develop compact platforms for ultrafast chiral sensing using structured light in free-space and integrated optical systems.

Duties and responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

Develop and characterize ultrafast laser-based sources of structured chiral light

Work with femtosecond laser systems and high-order harmonic generation (HHG) setups

Design and perform nonlinear optical and pump–probe experiments on chiral systems

Contribute to the development of waveguide–microfluidic photonic devices for chiral sensing

Analyze and interpret experimental data in collaboration with theoretical and experimental partners

Participate in international secondments, workshops, and training activities within the TRILOGY network

Develop transferable skills in scientific communication, project management, and interdisciplinary research

Skills/Qualifications

Essential skills:

Strong background in ultrafast optics, laser physics, or quantum/condensed matter physics

Interest in experimental photonics and spectroscopy





Ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment

Good written and spoken English

Experience with ultrafast laser systems or nonlinear optics

Programming and data analysis skills

Experience in laboratory research

Specific Requirements

Mobility rule compliance (MSCA eligibility)

Must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment

Willingness to participate in international secondments and network training events

Languages ENGLISH Level Excellent

Eligibility criteria

Candidates for the PhD positions must have a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science or equivalent by the time they commence the project.

Must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment

As for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions mobility rule, to be hired you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
