About the Role
Nature Genetics is a leading scientific journal that publishes the highest quality research in genetics and genomics with a current focus on the genetic basis for common and complex diseases, and on the functional mechanisms and evolution of gene networks. The role is for an Associate or Senior Editor covering the broad area of cancer research.
Role responsibilities
- Critically evaluate research manuscripts and make initial editorial decisions.
- Select and engage peer reviewers, interpret advice to make post-review editorial decisions.
- Help prospective authors address reviewer feedback and streamline manuscript revision.
- Ensure that all stakeholders comply with best professional, scientific and ethical practices.
- Work closely with the chief editor and editorial team to make sound decisions and contribute to the journal’s annual strategic plan.
- Make timely decisions and adhere to internal processing deadlines.
- Foster relationships with Springer Nature teams beyond Nature Genetics.
- Write front-half pieces such as Editorials and Research Highlights, and edit research manuscripts.
- Select and participate in, or co-organise, international scientific meetings and conferences relevant to the journal’s scope.
- Engage with the global scientific community through institutional and laboratory visits.
- Respond promptly to requests from authors, reviewers and colleagues.
- Adhere to and help improve internal pipelines, editorial processes and policies.
Experience, Skills & QualificationsEssential
- Ph.D. in cancer research or oncology, or a Ph.D. in biomedical research followed by postdoctoral experience in cancer research.
- Broad interest in science and in-depth knowledge of the cancer research field.
- Ability to understand and critically evaluate relevant research.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Proven scientific and academic writing skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Willingness to learn new fields and engage with the scientific community.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, target-driven environment.
- Detail-, time- and quality-oriented with strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Basic understanding of publishing workflows and systems.
Desirable
- Expertise in bioinformatics.
- Postdoctoral experience.
- Editorial experience.
Full training will be given; candidates with editorial experience may be considered for a Senior Editor position. xysqume
