Waste Management Expert

In this role you will provide technical expertise for managing radioactive waste from decommissioning activities at JRC facilities. You will help develop and implement waste strategies, ensure regulatory alignment, and support the design and operation of waste storage and handling. You will work within a JV delivering support services to accelerate decommissioning and waste management across European sites. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient waste management, shaping decommissioning programs for a secure and sustainable future.
- Develop and implement radioactive waste management strategies
- Support waste minimisation and waste hierarchy initiatives
- Prepare waste treatment, conditioning, packaging, transport, and disposal plans
- Coordinate interfaces between decommissioning and waste management activities
- Define waste characterization programmes
- Assess radiological and chemical inventories
- Review sampling and analysis methodologies and non-destructive testing requirements
- Review assay and analysis results
- Classify waste according to local regulations
- Ensure compliance with IAEA Safety Standards, Euratom requirements,
Italian nuclear regulations and environmental legislation
- Support license applications and regulatory submissions
- Interface with regulatory authorities and stakeholders
- Review contractor deliverables and technical studies
- Support design and operation of waste storage facilities
- Monitor waste treatment and conditioning activities
- Provide technical recommendations to project management teams
- Master's degree in Nuclear / Environmental Engineering / Waste Management / Physics or related scientific discipline
- Significant experience in radioactive waste management
- Experience supporting nuclear decommissioning projects
- Knowledge of waste characterization, treatment, conditioning, storage, and disposal
- Experience working in regulated nuclear environments
- Strong team collaboration, stakeholder management and communication skills
- Good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
