Research Assistant II in the Faculty of Law (Ref.: ) (to commence as soon as possible for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal)
The Public Interest Clinic of the Faculty of Law is the Faculty's experiential learning course in public interest law.
Working in partnership with non-governmental organisations, students take on live casework and research under supervision in the Clinic's practice areas: refugee and non-refoulement protection, human trafficking and forced labour, disability and mental health, child protection, and sexual and domestic violence.
Each term the Clinic runs several student groups handling a mixture of casework and research projects.
Applicants should possess a good degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent, or pass the CPE examinations or equivalent, from a university or comparable institution.
The law degree or equivalent must be in common law, normally from a Hong Kong or Commonwealth institution.
They should preferably have work experience in law firms or chambers, together with a demonstrable commitment to public interest law and to working with marginalised and vulnerable clients; experience in the non-governmental sector, in a legal clinic, or in human rights,
immigration or anti-trafficking work would be an advantage.
An excellent command of English and Chinese (including Putonghua) and good computer literacy are essential, as the appointee will be required to liaise with international students.
The appointee will be expected to assist with the teaching of the Clinic, including preparing for and supporting classes, workshops and supervision sessions and the preparation of teaching materials; to support live casework under supervision, including client meetings, hearings and the preparation of documents; to conduct legal, country-of-origin and policy research and to prepare research memoranda and reports; and to assist in the clerical and administrative tasks and assignments of the Clinic, including its case records and course administration.
He/She will also be responsible for liaising with students, partner organisations and referral sources and for coordinating the Clinic's student groups, and should be able to handle confidential and sensitive material with discretion, to work with clients who may have experienced trauma, and to demonstrate an ability to deal with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
