Blue Oak Consulting
This Junior Research Analyst role supports our engagement with a major Italian financial services firm, focusing on the rigorous testing of their commercial assumptions. You will assist in uncovering the truth behind the numbers to help senior leadership make informed decisions about their portfolio and capital allocation.
About Blue Oak Consulting Blue Oak Consulting provides independent advisory on pricing, portfolio economics, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. We are not a traditional consulting firm focused on broad transformation programs or high level strategy decks.
Instead, we interrogate specific commercial decisions where the financial stakes are high and the existing narrative is not sufficient. Our team looks past corporate language and P&L; complexity to identify where value is leaking or capital is trapped. We work across sectors like software, manufacturing, and healthcare to test whether the assumptions behind a growth plan or an acquisition actually hold under pressure.
We are a small, principal led firm where the people who do the work are the ones accountable for the results. We do not take transaction contingent fees, which allows us to be completely honest about whether the economics of a decision make sense. Our goal is to provide clarity through financial discipline and a healthy amount of skepticism. We stay through the execution phase because decisions that look sound in theory often fail when they meet real world friction.
The Role As a Junior Research Analyst, you will be part of a small, focused team working in a fully remote environment. Your work centers on finding the disconnect between what a financial model says and what the data actually supports.
In this position, you are not just gathering facts; you are looking for friction points and questioning the logic that others might take for granted. You will work closely with our principals,
gaining exposure to complex financial problems while developing a disciplined approach to research and analysis. Because we are a remote firm, you will need to be self directed and clear in your communication.
We rely on written clarity and logical rigor to move projects forward.
What You Will Be Doing
- Reviewing financial disclosures and internal documents from a major Italian financial services provider to extract specific data points.
- Building and maintaining spreadsheets that track historical performance against projected growth to see where gaps appear.
- Conducting secondary research into industry benchmarks to verify if the client's pricing or acquisition assumptions are realistic.
- Testing the sensitivity of financial models by changing key variables and documenting the resulting impact on portfolio economics.
- Organizing large sets of raw data into clean, structured formats that allow for clearer analysis of capital allocation.
- Assisting in the drafting of internal reports that highlight where financial value might be at risk or where capital is currently trapped.
- Participating in internal team calls to discuss findings and provide evidence for or against a particular commercial narrative.
- Monitoring news and regulatory updates relevant to the financial services sector to keep the project team informed of external pressures.
What You Bring
- An undergraduate degree in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field that emphasizes quantitative reasoning.
- High proficiency in Excel, including the ability to organize complex data sets and use common logical functions without difficulty.
- A skeptical mindset and a genuine interest in finding out why a number is what it is, rather than just accepting it at face value.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to explain a finding in plain English without relying on corporate jargon.
- The discipline to work effectively in a fully remote setting, managing your own tasks and meeting internal deadlines.
- Attention to detail that allows you to spot inconsistencies in large documents or discrepancies between different data sources.
- Basic knowledge of financial statements, specifically how the P&L; interacts with cash flow and balance sheet items.
What We Offer
- Permanent, full-time employment within a principal led firm that values directness and honesty.
- A fully remote work arrangement that allows you to structure your day for maximum productivity without a commute.
- Competitive pay that reflects the analytical nature of the work and the value you bring to the research process.
- Direct access to senior advisors, providing an environment where you can learn how complex financial decisions are actually made.
- A culture that avoids corporate theater and instead focuses on the quality of the evidence and the logic of the argument.
- Opportunities to work on high stakes projects across various sectors, starting with a significant engagement in the Italian financial services space.
Working at Blue Oak Consulting means choosing substance over style. We are a firm built on the idea that the best advice comes from people who are willing to look at the hard truths, even when they are inconvenient. As you start your career here, you will be expected to contribute to that culture of discipline and skepticism. Our work involves challenging established views, but it is rewarding for those who find satisfaction in financial clarity. We provide the tools and the mentorship, but the drive to understand the mechanics of a business must come from you.
