Position Context

The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is part of NATO's Science and Technology Organization and focuses on maritime domain science & technology solutions for defence and security.
The role is within the Research Division's Autonomous Naval Mine Warfare (ANMW) team.
Principal Duties
Support the ANMW programme of work in developing innovative research ideas in naval mine warfare, seabed warfare and drone warfare.
Design, develop, implement and validate state?of?the?art autonomy algorithms for uncrewed underwater, surface and air vehicles.
Develop rigorous mathematical models for advanced autonomy algorithms and assess their performance.
Collaborate with researchers and domain experts to identify research questions, design experiments, and evaluate results.
Conduct and document theoretical and experimental investigations as part of maritime research projects.
Stay current with advancements in autonomy, robotics and related fields and apply relevant methodologies to projects.
Participate in interdisciplinary research teams, contribute to research proposals and publications, and present findings at conferences and workshops.
Support the organization and execution of NATO workshops and conferences, and develop proposals for external funding.
Special Requirements and Additional Duties
Flexibility to perform additional related duties as directed.
Potential deployment aboard CMRE or chartered vessels and undertaking temporary duty assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.




Must hold a fit?for?sea certificate in line with IMO and ILO standards.
Essential Qualifications
Professional experience :
Strong background in autonomous navigation, mapping, perception, autonomous behaviours, and/or AI?driven autonomy.
Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or related field.
Evidence of high?quality scientific research in robotics with a significant publication record.
Experience with scientific programming using Linux, MATLAB, Python and other standard tools.
Experience in multi?disciplinary scientific project work and in the execution and submission of scientific projects.
Education/Training :
MSc in a recognised scientific or engineering field with at least 3 years post?MSc experience focused on physics, acoustics or signal processing; or
PhD in physics, engineering, applied mathematics or related field with training in ocean acoustics.
Language requirements : Thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken; English proficiency (SLP ****).
Most work is conducted in English.
Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of autonomous maritime vehicles, robotics, perception, tracking, target recognition, human?machine interfaces, navigation, signal and image processing, modelling, simulation, and acoustic sensors.




Advanced programming skills in C++ or other high?performance embedded languages.
Recent first?author publications in underwater robotics and/or autonomy.
Experience with robotics middleware such as ROS or ROS 2.
Experience with collaborative robotics architectures and algorithms.
Experience in control and systems theory.
Experience with AI applied to robotics.
Experience working in an international organization.
Publicly documented personal motivation projects.
Attributes and Competencies

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to solicit input from others.
Innovative, driven, and able to think outside the box.
Good time?management and organizational skills.
Agrile and resilient in a changing research environment.
Working Conditions
The duties may be performed in an office, laboratory, workshop, or on?board CMRE vessels.
Slightly undesirable working conditions may apply.
Benefits
Salary: 4,****** EUR monthly.
Grade: ABCL grade A1 / NATO grade G11.
Location: La Spezia sea port, Italy with access to two specialised research vessels.
Contract: 3?year definite duration, renewable based on performance and organisational needs.
Annual leave and home leave where eligible.
Comprehensive allowances, supplements and insurance in accordance with NCPR.
