Fraunhofer Italia with headquarters in Bolzano (Italy) is offering an internship position in its division Robotics and Intelligent Systems Engineering (RISE). The Robotics & Intelligent Systems Engineering division at Fraunhofer Italia focuses on advancing the conception, development, and practical deployment of collaborative and mobile robotic systems. The research emphasizes modular and reconfigurable assistance and robotics solutions that can be tailored to diverse industrial applications. A central aspect of this work is the pursuit of flexibility in modern robotic systems, particularly through the straightforward configurability of both hardware and software components, enabling safe, efficient, and user-friendly operation.

The topic:
The projects ROBO&M; and Supernova focus on the development of field-robotic solutions for inspection activities in solar farms. Fraunhofer Italia is in charge to develop a hardware prototype as well as the control software modules of the field-robot. Within the scope of the projects, several activities can be proposed for students activities and thesis works:
- Pose estimation of the mobile robot with respect to natural landmarks,
- Setup and hardware testing of the mobile robot prototype and its modules (including PLC programming, field-tests etc.),
- Work on the autonomous navigation capabilities of the mobile robot.
Requirements:
- You are a university student in mechatronics, robotics, computer engineering or similar.
- You have programming experience in C++, Python. Knowledge of the Robot Operating System (ROS) 2 is a plus.
- You work independently, systematically, and with a high level of commitment, creativity, and team spirit.
- You are an EU citizen or have a valid work permit for Italy.
- You are proficient in English; knowledge of Italian or German is an advantage.
- The internship will be carried out in presence at our premises in Bolzano.
Your task:
Your main activity will consist in supporting the research and project teams of the projects with technical developments, scientific activities or testing. Depending on the agreed activity, you will develop software tools and work with the real hardware prototype.
