Applications are invited for two PhD positions in theoretical physics at the Department of Physics of the University of Pisa. The successful candidates will work in the research group led by Alessandro Vichi, within the FIS Advanced project QBOOT - Bootstrapping Quantum Field Theories.
The official call lists two funded positions under the project title Analytic and Numerical Bootstrap Methods in Quantum Field Theory.
Research project
The projects will investigate the non-perturbative structure of quantum field theories by combining analytic insights with state-of-the-art numerical bootstrap techniques.
Possible research directions include:
- conformal field theory and the conformal bootstrap;
- scattering amplitudes and S-matrix bootstrap methods;
- strongly coupled gauge theories, including QCD;
- holography and AdS/CFT;
- the development of efficient numerical algorithms for solving bootstrap equations;
- the design and application of modern machine-learning techniques to improve numerical precision, explore large theory spaces,

and uncover new structures in quantum field theory.

A central goal will be to strengthen the interplay between analytic understanding, numerical computation, and algorithmic innovation. The specific direction of each project will be developed according to the candidate’s background and scientific interests.
Research environment
The successful candidates will join a dynamic and rapidly growing research group in theoretical physics. At full capacity, the group is expected to consist of four PhD students and six postdoctoral researchers, providing a stimulating and highly collaborative environment for research at the interface of quantum field theory, mathematical physics, numerical methods, and machine learning.
