Turn engineering designs into the finished parts, prototypes, and assemblies that make Leva’s kinetic installations possible.
We’re looking for a hands-on Prototype Fabrication Specialist who can move from engineering CAD and drawings to CAM, setup, machining, finishing, fitting, and assembly. You’ll produce one-off and low-volume components that must work reliably as part of larger kinetic systems.
This is a workshop-first role. The engineering team owns the original component and system design; you will own the practical route from supplied engineering data to finished output, identify manufacturability issues, and feed workshop learning back into the design process.
The position can be filled at mid or senior level. Around three or more years of relevant experience is a useful guide, not a hard gate: we will assess level through hands-on evidence, job complexity, workshop judgment, repeatability improvements, and coaching scope.
In this role you will:
- Review engineering CAD, drawings, materials, tolerances, quantities, finish requirements, cost, and lead time before starting fabrication.
- Select practical production processes that match the part, project constraints, and required level of repeatability.
- Prepare, optimise, and safely prove CAM programs for three-axis CNC milling.
- Select cutting tools, workholding, fixtures, feeds, speeds, machining strategies, and safe operation sequences.
- Set up and operate CNC milling equipment, inspect early results, and adapt the process when the material, setup, or first part requires iteration.
- Make limited production-oriented CAD changes and design fixtures, jigs, soft jaws, templates, and other workshop aids, while leaving the original engineering architecture with the design team.
- Fabricate one-off and low-volume parts in aluminium, engineering plastics, wood, and related materials, working to drawing tolerances including the 0.05–0.10 mm range where required.
- Deburr, finish, fit, adjust, and assemble components, prototypes, and kinetic or fitout assemblies.
- Operate FDM and SLA 3D-printing equipment, prepare and optimise 3D models for production, and learn Leva-specific workflows during onboarding. Apply manual milling, turning, welding, sheet-metal, woodworking, or other workshop processes when competent and appropriate.
- Carry out routine dimensional checks, document important setup and process information, and support repeatable fabrication and handover.
- Maintain CNC and 3D-printing equipment, consumables, and stock; perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance; and contribute to practical tooling, job-priority, and workshop-maintenance routines.
- Communicate manufacturability issues clearly, collaborate with engineering, assembly, suppliers, and site teams, and support international installation when required.
- At mid level, independently take defined parts or assemblies from supplied engineering data through process selection, CAM, setup, machining, finishing, checking, and handover. Make safe tooling and workholding decisions with limited supervision and identify manufacturability issues early.
- At senior level, personally plan and execute complex or high-risk workshop jobs, resolve difficult setup and tolerance problems, improve fixtures and repeatability, strengthen job documentation and production flow, and coach less-experienced fabricators while remaining hands-on.
Must have:
- Practical experience programming, setting up, and operating three-axis CNC milling equipment.
- Hands-on CAM capability in Fusion 360 or another transferable CAM platform. Fusion 360 itself is not mandatory.
- Sound judgment in tool selection, workholding, fixtures, cutting strategy, feeds, speeds, and safe machining sequences.
- Evidence of personally producing real parts, prototypes, tooling, or low-volume components—not only preparing files, loading machines, or observing production.
- Ability to read technical drawings and work with materials, tolerances, quantities, and finish requirements.
- Experience making production-oriented CAD adjustments and developing fixtures, jigs, soft jaws, templates, or comparable workshop aids.
- Hands-on experience with deburring, finishing, fitting, mechanical or fitout assembly, and physical handover.
- A disciplined approach to workshop safety, equipment care, checking, and traceable job information.
- B2-level English, or equivalent working proficiency, for technical documentation, workshop collaboration, and on-site installation. Italian is useful but not mandatory.
- Willingness to work primarily from Leva’s Turin workshop and travel internationally according to project requirements.
Key skills:
- Broad digital-fabrication and process-selection judgment: knowing when CNC machining, 3D printing, another workshop process, or a simple robust solution best fits the part.
- Structured troubleshooting across CAM, workholding, tooling, material behaviour, finish, and dimensional results.
- Ability to balance precision, surface quality, cost, time, and repeatability according to the real needs of the part.
- Clear manufacturability feedback that helps engineering improve a design without blurring ownership of the original design.
- Personal ownership from supplied data to finished, checked, and handed-over output.
- Reliable workshop organisation, including documentation, tooling, consumables, stock, cleaning, and routine maintenance.
- Clear communication, practical negotiation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and adaptability when prototypes, priorities, or project constraints change.
- Additional experience in manual milling, G-code checking or editing, turning, welding, sheet-metal work, woodworking, deburring, surface preparation, finishing, or routine workshop measurement is welcome but not required.
- Laser cutting, composite fabrication, painting, mould-making, basic electronics-integration support, and experience with FDM/SLA workflows beyond day-to-day operation are also useful but optional.
- Experience in prototype workshops, special machinery, automotive or motorsport prototypes, exhibits, scenic fabrication, model making, museums, themed entertainment, public-facing installations, fitout, commissioning, or off-site handover is a plus.
- Advanced metrology, CMM programming, casting expertise, ownership of the original mechanical architecture, and formal people-management experience are not required.
As a reference, compensation for mid-level profiles typically starts at around €32,000 RAL + benefits package. For senior candidates with strong and directly relevant experience, the offer may increase up to €42,000 RAL + benefits package.
