Optical Engineer (Space Optics)

Location: Northern Italy (Hybrid)

Salary starting: €45,000–€50,000 + Benefits

Contract: Permanent | Full-Time

NewSpace Technical is partnering with an innovative European aerospace company developing advanced optical technologies for next-generation space missions. As the organisation continues to expand its engineering capability, they are looking to add an experienced Optical Engineer to their multidisciplinary team.

This is an opportunity to work on the design, development, integration, and testing of high-performance optical systems used in demanding space applications.

The Role

As an Optical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and analysis of optical systems from concept through to integration and verification. You'll collaborate closely with mechanical, systems, electronics, and manufacturing engineers to ensure optical performance is achieved throughout the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and develop optical systems and optical assemblies for aerospace applications.
- Perform optical modelling, performance analysis, and engineering trade-off studies.
- Conduct tolerance analyses and optimise designs for manufacture and integration.
- Define optical performance budgets and verification approaches.
- Develop optical alignment concepts, procedures, and test methodologies.
- Specify optical components and support supplier selection and technical reviews.
- Support assembly, integration,



alignment, and environmental testing activities.
- Carry out optical performance assessments and radiometric analyses.
- Produce clear engineering documentation, including design reports, test procedures, and technical specifications.
- Work closely with suppliers, manufacturing teams, and project stakeholders throughout development.

About You

We're looking for engineers with a passion for optical systems and space technology who enjoy solving complex engineering challenges.

Essential Skills

- Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
- At least 3 years' experience in optical engineering.
- Experience designing and analysing precision optical systems.
- Knowledge of optical modelling and performance analysis.
- Experience with optical alignment and laboratory test setups.
- Understanding of optical metrology techniques.
- Proficiency with optical design software such as Zemax.
- Experience with stray-light analysis tools is advantageous.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Desirable Experience

- Experience with telescope or imaging system design.
- Familiarity with optical manufacturing and precision assembly processes.
- Programming experience with MATLAB and/or Python.
- Previous experience within the aerospace or space sector.
