About the Role:

Institute Itech is seeking a technically versatile and experienced Mechatronics Engineer to join its engineering team in Milan. The role covers the full spectrum of mechatronic systems development — from embedded firmware and control systems to mechanical integration, actuator design, and sensor fusion — and is transversal across Institute Itech's flagship projects.

The selected candidate will work alongside mechanical engineers, hardware designers, software developers, and project leads, developing the integrated electromechanical systems that power Institute Itech's environmental sensing platforms, urban monitoring infrastructure, and advanced technological projects.

This is an ideal opportunity for a mid-level mechatronics professional looking to apply and expand their expertise across a technically diverse and demanding project portfolio with meaningful real-world impact.

Responsibilities:

System Design & Mechatronic Integration

- Design and develop integrated mechatronic systems combining mechanical, electrical, and software components
- Define system architectures that ensure coherence across actuators, sensors, control units, and embedded processors

- Lead the integration of electromechanical assemblies from concept through to validated operational unit
- Collaborate with mechanical and electronic engineers to ensure cross-disciplinary design coherence

Embedded Firmware & Control Systems

- Develop and maintain firmware for microcontrollers and embedded processors (ARM Cortex, STM32, ESP32, or equivalent)
- Implement control algorithms including PID, state machines, and motion control logic in C and C++
- Develop and manage real-time applications using RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or equivalent)
- Ensure timing, scheduling, and interrupt management meet system-level performance requirements

Sensor Fusion & IoT Connectivity

- Integrate and calibrate sensors for environmental monitoring, motion sensing, and positional awareness
- Implement sensor fusion algorithms to combine data from multiple sources into reliable system inputs
- Develop IoT connectivity solutions using protocols including MQTT, BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi, or equivalent
- Support the integration of mechatronic systems with cloud platforms and backend data infrastructure

Prototyping, Testing & Validation

- Lead the prototyping and physical assembly of mechatronic systems and subassemblies
- Design and execute testing procedures including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and field validation
- Use debugging tools including JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers to diagnose and resolve issues
- Support the transition of mechatronic systems from prototype to production-ready hardware

Cross-Project Technical Contribution

- Contribute mechatronic expertise across projects including Balloon™, Oxyleaf™, Memoria™, and Biocity™
- Participate in technical design reviews, architecture decisions, and cross-functional planning sessions
- Identify and communicate system-level risks and propose mitigation strategies in collaboration with project leads

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

- Maintain thorough technical documentation for all mechatronic development activities
- Produce system specifications, integration guides, and validation reports
- Support knowledge transfer and onboarding of future team members

Requirements

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- 4–6 years of experience in mechatronics, embedded systems, or electromechanical system development
- Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded and control applications

- Hands-on experience with microcontrollers and embedded processors (STM32, ESP32, ARM Cortex, or equivalent)
- Experience with RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or equivalent)
- Solid knowledge of sensor integration, actuator control, and electromechanical system design
- Experience with IoT communication protocols (MQTT, BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers)
- Proficiency in CAD tools for mechanical design (SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent)
- Fluent Italian (mandatory)
- Fluent English (mandatory)
- Systematic problem-solving approach, strong attention to detail, and hands-on mindset

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with low-power design techniques and battery-operated mechatronic systems
- Knowledge of wireless communication stacks and RF system integration
- Familiarity with Linux-based embedded systems (Yocto, Buildroot, or equivalent)
- Experience with simulation tools for control systems (MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent)
- Background in environmental monitoring, aerospace, robotics, or urban technology applications
- Experience supporting hardware bring-up and PCB validation processes
- Knowledge of functional safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines applied to embedded firmware development

Benefits Provided

- Mid-level role with immediate exposure to a technically diverse and challenging project portfolio
- Direct collaboration with mechanical engineers, hardware designers, software developers, and multidisciplinary research teams
- Transversal experience across multiple flagship projects and mechatronic application domains
- Growth path toward Senior Mechatronics Engineer or Lead Systems Engineer
