AI Engineer - Tech Lead

About the Role
We're looking for a technical lead to drive our AI initiatives across clinical and pharmaceutical projects. This is a broad, high-impact role in a small, fast-moving company: you'll own projects end-to-end — from requirements gathering with the client through to a production-ready product — while also contributing to our research work on EU-funded projects.
The workload isn't evenly distributed: roughly half your time will be spent on pharma client projects, with the rest organized in variable blocks depending on the period — weeks focused on development and deployment, weeks dedicated to European research projects, and weeks spent on state-of-the-art research. We're looking for someone comfortable switching context frequently and working with a good degree of autonomy, as there is currently no other internal technical lead to rely on.
What You'll Do
Pharma Client Projects (~50% of your time)
- Lead requirements and data analysis with clients, developing a solid understanding of the underlying business case
- Design technical solutions and confidently present and defend them to non-technical stakeholders
- Engage directly with a diverse range of stakeholders: physicians, engineers, medical affairs, and legal teams
- Own the technical relationship throughout the project lifecycle, communicating fluently in both Italian and English depending on the client
- Manage and coordinate client-facing project work, balancing scope, timelines, and stakeholder expectations
Development & Production
- Build proof-of-concepts and prototypes for AI applications
- Take solutions from prototype to production: infrastructure, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of live systems
- Coordinate and manage external developers and partner companies contributing to application development
- Collaborate closely with researchers at Humanitas — a genuine technical partnership, not just a client relationship
European Research Projects
- Represent Train as a technology partner, with a focus on deep learning and generative models
- Draft project deliverables and periodic reports
- Participate in consortium meetings and present results to project partners
- Lead coordination across research work packages and manage relationships with international consortium partners
- Travel for international project assemblies and scientific conferences (approximately twice a year)
What We're Looking For
- 2–5 years of experience in AI/ML engineering or applied data science
- Strong foundations in deep learning, with familiarity in generative models
- Solid software engineering fundamentals: comfortable discussing APIs, application architecture, and model integration as a peer with external developers. You don't need to be a senior developer, but you need to know what you're talking about and be able to evaluate others' work
- Proven ability to manage projects and coordinate teams, including external developers, partner companies, and cross-functional stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills with non-technical audiences
- Fluent Italian and English, both written and spoken — you'll operate in both languages depending on the client and project
- A high degree of autonomy and ownership
