Automation Engineer - Contract | Immediate Start - Italy

Initial 3-month contract, with strong potential to extend to 6 months
We are recruiting on behalf of our client, who is looking for experienced Automation Engineers to join a fast‑paced, multi‑site automation programme across the UK and Europe.
You will work alongside the client's in‑house engineering and controls teams, supporting PLC code development, implementation, commissioning, testing and continuous improvement across a network of highly automated sites.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on Automation or Controls Engineer to join a high‑performing team delivering complex, high‑impact projects.
You will work on a site closest to you and remote support other locations.
What You'll Be Doing
- Developing, testing and commissioning PLC code using Siemens TIA Portal
- Supporting fault‑finding and troubleshooting on live automated systems
- Leading and contributing to process improvement initiatives
- Integrating and migrating code across Siemens TIA Portal versions
- Supporting the deployment and commissioning of new automation projects
- Acting as a key technical point of contact within a skilled team of contractors and permanent engineers
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years' experience coding and commissioning in Siemens TIA
- Strong working knowledge of Siemens TIA Portal (version 16 and above)
- Experience troubleshooting complex issues across Controls, Fieldbus (Profinet, Profibus, ASi) and IT platforms
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex technical issues to a range of stakeholders
- Strong project management, organisation and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and teams
- Good written and verbal English
- Ability to work autonomously xysqume with minimal supervision
- Sound knowledge of machine safety regulations and safe working practices
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of the Ignition platform for building SCADA/HMI systems
- Familiarity with SCADA and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) concepts
- Ability to analyse performance metrics to drive process optimisation
- Experience leading a change management process
