Who we are
H2D Energy is an innovative start-up headquartered in Cagliari and a pioneer in hybrid energy storage. The historical limitation of renewables is intermittency: we overcome it by integrating batteries, green hydrogen and intelligent control algorithms to turn a discontinuous production into clean, continuous and dispatchable energy, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our proprietary technology, HyVault, covered by two patent applications, stores the surplus generated by renewable sources and delivers it back whenever needed — hours, days or entire seasons later: batteries cover the short term, hydrogen preserves energy over the long term without losses, and control algorithms orchestrate the whole system moment by moment. It is a scalable platform — from the few kWh of a home up to industrial and grid scale — already operating in the field, and now at the core of an industrial Proof of Concept for the decarbonization of a 350 MW thermoelectric power plant in Brazil.
The context you will work in
You will join our technical team at a time of strong acceleration: in Sardinia, alongside leading industrial and academic partners, we are building a real-world demonstrator of our technology — a photovoltaic plant of over 100 kWp integrated with battery storage systems, an electrolyzer for green hydrogen production and electric vehicle charging infrastructure — governed by a digital twin, control algorithms and artificial intelligence. In this journey, electrical flows are the nervous system of the technology: your role will be to design and oversee them.
What you will do The scope of the project is the construction of a hybrid battery and hydrogen energy storage system. Your responsibility is its entire electrical design: every connection inside the system, every connection between the system and the outside world, and the selection of the components that make both work.
- Develop the electrical architecture of the product: single-line diagrams,
AC/DC topology, voltage levels, distribution and switchgear concept, sizing of transformers, rectifier, inverters and DC-coupling between photovoltaics, battery and electrolyzer.
- Design and model the electrical flows between photovoltaics, batteries, electrolyzer, flexible loads and electric vehicle charging, in compliance with technical, safety and grid-connection constraints.
- Dimension the electrical equipment and prove it: load flow, short-circuit and selectivity calculations, cable sizing, earthing and lightning protection concept, harmonics and power quality at the rectifier.
- Define the grid-connection concept and the technical requirements arising from it: protection settings, grid codes, reactive power behavior, islanding and black-start considerations where relevant.
- Specify the electrical interfaces of the plant: I/O lists, signal exchange between EMS, PLC, converters, BMS and electrolyzer control, safety chain and emergency shutdown wiring.
- Contribute the electrical requirements for the control logic (operating modes, priorities, interlocks, ramp and setpoint limits) as technical input for the algorithm team, and support the development and testing of the algorithms both in a simulated environment (digital twin) and in the field.
- Cover the electrical aspects of hazardous areas: equipment selection for Ex zones, potential equalization, gas detection and ventilation interlocks, in cooperation with process engineering.
- Technically evaluate components and suppliers: requirement lists,
datasheet and factory-acceptance review, technical clarification with manufacturers.
- Contribute to the definition of the system’s energy and economic performance indicators.
- Accompany commissioning and the test campaign on the demonstrator: functional tests, measurements, troubleshooting and feedback into the product design, up to the validation of the technology.
What we are looking for
- Degree in Electrical or Energy Engineering (Master's degree preferred); talented new graduates are also warmly considered.
- Knowledge of photovoltaic plants, storage systems, power electronics and grid connection.
- Fundamentals of modeling and simulation (Matlab/Simulink and/or Python).
- Knowledge of CEI (Italian electrotechnical) standards and electrical safety.
- Fluent English, spoken and written (a must).
Preferred qualifications
- Thesis or hands-on experience with microgrids, energy management systems (EMS), hydrogen/power-to-X, electrolyzers.
- PLC/SCADA and industrial protocols (Modbus, MQTT, CAN).
- Familiarity with hazardous-area classification (ATEX/Ex zones), gas detection and ventilation interlocks.
- Practice with electrical calculation and design tools: load flow and short-circuit software, CAD single-line diagrams.
- 1–3 years of experience in electrical design or renewable energy.
- Knowledge of the Sardinian language.
