About the Role:

Institute Itech is seeking a curious and technically grounded Junior Computer Scientist with a focus on AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science to join its technology team in Milan. The role is transversal in nature: the candidate will contribute across multiple flagship projects, developing and applying intelligent systems, data pipelines, and machine learning models to real-world challenges spanning neuroimaging, environmental monitoring, urban intelligence, and advanced data infrastructure.

The selected candidate will work alongside senior researchers, data engineers, software developers, and project leads, contributing to the design, training, and deployment of AI and ML solutions in a research-driven, applied environment.

This is an ideal opportunity for a recently graduated or early-career computer scientist eager to apply their academic foundation in AI and data science to projects with tangible scientific, environmental, and technological impact.

Responsibilities:

AI & Machine Learning Development

- Design, develop, and train machine learning and deep learning models for a variety of application domains




- Implement and evaluate supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning algorithms
- Contribute to the full ML pipeline: data collection, preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and deployment
- Stay current with state-of-the-art AI research and identify opportunities for application within Institute Itech's projects

Data Science & Analytics

- Develop data pipelines for the ingestion, processing, and analysis of structured and unstructured datasets
- Perform exploratory data analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization to extract actionable insights
- Support the integration of data science outputs into operational systems and project platforms
- Contribute to the design and maintenance of data infrastructure across Institute Itech's project portfolio

Research & Experimentation

- Participate in applied research activities, including literature review, hypothesis formulation, and experimental design
- Implement and benchmark AI/ML models against established baselines and project-specific performance targets
- Document research findings, experimental results, and model performance in clear internal reports
- Contribute to the preparation of technical papers, presentations, or project deliverables as required

Cross-Project Technical Contribution

- Apply AI and data science expertise across projects including Memoria™, Oxyleaf™, Polaris™, Balloon™, and Biocity™
- Collaborate with engineering, research, and product teams to integrate intelligent systems into broader project architectures
- Participate in technical design reviews, architecture decisions, and cross-functional planning sessions

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

- Maintain clear and organized technical documentation for all AI and data science activities
- Contribute to internal wikis, model registries, and knowledge bases
- Support knowledge transfer and onboarding of future team members

Requirements

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a closely related discipline
- Up to 0–3 years of experience in AI, machine learning, or data science (academic and thesis experience considered)
- Solid proficiency in Python and core ML/DS libraries (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas, NumPy, or equivalent)




- Understanding of machine learning fundamentals: supervised and unsupervised learning, model evaluation, overfitting, and regularization
- Familiarity with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and exploratory data analysis
- Basic understanding of version control with Git
- Fluent Italian (mandatory)
- Fluent English (mandatory)
- Analytical mindset, intellectual curiosity, and a rigorous approach to experimentation

Preferred Qualifications

- Thesis or research experience in deep learning, computer vision, NLP, or time-series analysis
- Familiarity with cloud-based ML platforms (AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex AI, Azure ML, or equivalent)
- Experience with MLOps tools and model deployment pipelines (MLflow, DVC, Docker, or equivalent)
- Knowledge of graph neural networks, reinforcement learning, or generative AI models
- Familiarity with neuroimaging data formats or biomedical signal processing (relevant to Memoria™)
- Experience with geospatial or environmental datasets (relevant to Oxyleaf™, Terra™, and Balloon™)
- Interest in AI ethics, explainability, and responsible AI development practices
- Familiarity with Agile or Scrum methodologies in a research or engineering context

Compensation

Annual Gross Salary: €44,000, in line with junior AI and data science profiles.

Additional performance-based incentives may be provided based on project contribution and research milestones achieved.
