We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join ourresearch group at the University of Brescia and contribute to the development ofinnovative mechanistic models describing the population dynamics of invasivespecies and agricultural pests. The position is full-time and immediatelyavailable within an already funded and active research programme, offering theopportunity to contribute from the outset to ongoing national and Horizon Europeprojects.
The successful candidate will develop mechanistic and computational models,estimate biological parameters and functional relationships from experimentaland field data, design inference and uncertainty quantification methods, andimplement reproducible computational workflows. The research will support thedevelopment of decision-support tools for plant health, agriculturalsustainability, and environmental risk assessment.
The position involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team ofecologists, entomologists, statisticians, plant pathologists, and computerscientists, as well as extensive interaction with Italian and internationaluniversities, research institutes, and public organizations throughcollaborative research projects and scientific networks.
Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical or computationalmodelling, quantitative ecology, statistics, applied mathematics, computerscience, or related disciplines. Experience in mechanistic modelling, parameterestimation, uncertainty analysis, and scientific programming (Python, R, MATLAB,C++, or similar) is highly desirable.
Biological invasions and emerging agricultural pests are among the greatestthreats to food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. Understandingand predicting the population dynamics of invasive species is essential fordeveloping sustainable management strategies and supporting evidence-baseddecision making. As the number and impact of invasive alien species continue toincrease worldwide,



this research area has become a major scientific priority,attracting substantial funding through national and European researchprogrammes.
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join ourresearch group at the University of Brescia and contribute to the development ofinnovative mechanistic models describing the population dynamics of invasivespecies and agricultural pests. The position is full-time and immediatelyavailable within an already funded and active research programme, providing theopportunity to contribute from the outset to ongoing national and Horizon Europeprojects. Given the strong and growing investment in this research area,successful candidates will have excellent opportunities to contribute to futurefunded projects and to pursue long-term research careers within the group.
The research group is coordinated by Professor Gianni Gilioli, aninternationally recognized expert in ecological modelling, invasive species, andquantitative risk assessment. Professor Gilioli has authored more than 400scientific publications and served as an EFSA Plant Health expert for more thanten years, contributing to numerous European scientific panels and riskassessment activities. The group has extensive expertise in ecologicalmodelling, population dynamics, plant health, and quantitative methods, andcurrently coordinates the modelling work packages of two Horizon Europeprojects, collaborating with leading universities, research institutes,governmental organizations, and European agencies.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and applicationof physiologically-based demographic model (PBDMs),



together with othermodelling approaches, to investigate the dynamics of invasive species andagricultural pests under different environmental and management scenarios.
Activities will include developing computational models, estimating biologicalparameters and functional relationships from laboratory and field data,designing inference and uncertainty quantification methods, and implementingreproducible computational workflows. The research will support the developmentof decision-support systems for plant health, agricultural sustainability, andenvironmental risk assessment.
The position involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team ofecologists, entomologists, statisticians, plant pathologists, mathematicians,and computer scientists, as well as extensive interaction with Italian andinternational partners through collaborative research projects. The successfulcandidate will be encouraged to develop scientific independence while activelycontributing to multidisciplinary research, publishing in leading internationaljournals, presenting results at international conferences, and participating inthe preparation of competitive research proposals.
Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical or computationalmodelling, quantitative ecology, applied mathematics, statistics, computerscience, engineering, physics, or related disciplines. Experience withecological or biological modelling, parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis,and scientific programming (Python, R, MATLAB, C++, or similar) is highlydesirable.
