About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the editorial team of Nature Mechanical Engineering as an Associate or Senior Editor.
Mechanical engineering is truly an interdisciplinary field. Mechanical engineers are involved in the design, development, and manufacture of devices and systems that have moving parts, across scales from nanotechnology to large aerospace systems. Mechanical engineers are critical innovators in almost every major field, including robotics and automation, aerospace and ocean engineering, materials and manufacturing, human health, energy, and environmental sustainability.
Launching in 2027,
Nature Mechanical Engineering will publish high-impact research across all application areas of mechanical engineering, as well as fundamental mechanics of immediate interest to the community. As the first broad-scope, flagship journal dedicated to mechanical engineering, it will connect academia, industry, and policymakers, showcasing the critical role mechanical engineers play in building a better future.
We welcome applicants across broad mechanical engineering, and we are particularly interested in candidates with interdisciplinary experience in mechanical engineering and biomedical/electrical engineering, such as medical devices, mechanical sensing, and mechatronics.
Role responsibilities The successful candidate will be part of the journal editorial team and play a key role in shaping, developing, and establishing the journal.
- Handle original research papers, applying strong manuscript assessment, scientific comprehension, and critical scientific evaluation skills to assess the significance, quality, and suitability of research for the journal.
- Oversee peer review and make well-reasoned, timely decisions, demonstrating strong decision quality and ensuring consistency and operational excellence throughout the editorial process.
- Contribute to content development and strategy in the represented area, drawing on broad scientific knowledge and scientific comprehension to identify important developments and emerging areas of research.
- Commission and edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, and Comments, and write editorials, applying excellent scientific and academic writing skills and communicating complex scientific topics clearly and effectively.
- Work extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature portfolio, fostering effective collaboration, building strong working relationships, and demonstrating interpersonal awareness.
- Communicate effectively with authors, reviewers, editors, and members of the wider research community, representing the journal professionally and building trusted relationships.
- Attend conferences and visit research institutions to develop a strong understanding of the scientific community and engage with researchers across the field.
- Adapt to new and complex areas of research, demonstrating resilience and the ability to absorb and evaluate new scientific information effectively.
- Use and contribute to the effective development of editorial publishing workflows and systems, ensuring high standards of quality and efficiency throughout the editorial process.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Applicants must have a PhD, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in the journal.
- Broad scientific knowledge and training.
- Excellent literary and communication skills.
- The ability to absorb new areas of research.
Desirable
- Postdoctoral experience.
- Previous editorial experience.
