JOB TITLE: Communications Officer TYPE OF CONTRACT: CST Regular (Level I)
UNIT/DIVISION: PRG-F Unit (GNAFC) / PRG Division
DUTY STATION (City, Country): Rome HQ, Italy
DURATION: 11 months (initial contract until 31/12/2026)
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) is a partnership platform, co-led by WFP and FAO, that brings together 11 humanitarian-development-peace actors to prevent famines and address food and nutrition crises. GNAFC is seeking a communications consultant to support a range of secretariat functions, including the preparation and production of external-facing policy papers and media-related outputs and website development, in support of GNAFC’s new Strategy.
The consultant will also serve as WFP’s focal point in the GNAFC secretariat on all related communications functions and will coordinate with respective counterparts of all GNAFC member organizations and with other partners and within other fora.
The consultant will also help ensure that GNAFC’s donors’ visibility and requests are addressed.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision and guidance of the GNAFC team lead, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Actively identify opportunities to build visibility for GNAFC and WFP’s engagement in global arenas through development of communications assets and outreach efforts via a variety of mediums and channels (reports, blogs, press, web, social media or multi-media materials)
- Serve as the communication’s focal points for the WFP GNAFC secretariat and proactively coordinate with counterparts in GNAFC members organizations to ensure alignment and support joint agendas
- Manage the GNAFC website include its redesign and modernization to align with GNAFC new Strategic Plan (2026-2030) in coordination with FAO secretariat counterparts.
- Manage GNAFC’s social media channels and messaging, in coordination with partners, and identify strategies to reach broader audiences online.
- Provide editorial review and development support for all GNAFC related outputs including internal briefs, talking points advocacy materials and external products (reports, policy briefs, social media messaging, website materials).
- Develop and implement GNAFC’s knowledge management strategy and priorities
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education
Advanced University degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, or International Affairs, or other fields relevant to international development assistance, or First University Degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.
Experience
At least 3-5 or more years of postgraduate progressively responsible, relevant professional experience in the private or public sector demonstrating high performance. (level 1 or 2 consultant)
Knowledge & Skills:
- Experience with the United Nations is desirable.
- Demonstrated interest and experiences in communications roles in humanitarian and/or development sector
- Experience in working with inter-agency or multilateral fora or in coordination role with external partner organizations.
- Specific technical knowledge and experience in website management or development.
- Experience in establishing knowledge management systems and processes.
- Experience in establishing and implementing social media outreach strategies and in graphic design for external communications outputs.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English.
Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or German is an advantage.
