We are looking for a deeply hands-on Senior Java Engineer who can provide technical leadership while continuing to design, build and ship production code. You will work across several backend services rather than being assigned to one isolated project. The environment consists of distributed, cloud-native systems, with Java as the primary language and Python used across parts of the wider platform.
You will collaborate closely with Product Owners, DevOps engineers and other development teams, helping shape technical solutions across multiple services and translating product requirements into scalable backend architecture.
Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, primarily in Java
Contribute to Python services and codebases when required
Work across approximately three to four interconnected microservices
Break down complex requirements and guide their technical implementation
Review code and establish strong engineering standards
Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance without formal line-management responsibility
Collaborate with Product Owners to evaluate requirements, trade-offs and delivery approaches
Build and operate cloud-native services, primarily on AWS
Deploy and run containerised applications using Kubernetes and Docker
Work with DevOps engineers on CI/CD, deployment, scalability and reliability
Use data, analytics and operational insights to support technical decisions
Contribute to testing, documentation and continuous improvement throughout the SDLC
Support the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and solutions where appropriate
At least 5 years of professional backend engineering experience
Strong, recent and hands-on commercial experience with Java
Proven experience designing and developing microservices or distributed systems
Professional experience contributing to production Python codebases
Strong knowledge of AWS and cloud-native application architecture
