Engineering Manager – Europe
Ashby is looking for an engineering manager who will help build a different type of engineering team and culture. The role focuses on building, coaching, and empowering a team of independent, high‑performing engineers while maintaining ownership of technical projects.
Responsibilities
Provide feedback on product and technical specifications to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality. You influence and coach ICs to reach the right decisions.
Grow engineers so they can take large, loosely defined projects and deliver them with little intervention, driving the work themselves.
Jump into the codebase to debug a customer issue, ship a small bug fix, or improve developer experience. Engineering leaders at Ashby maintain strong technical skills while staying off the critical path.
Improve data generation and simulation in demo accounts—a project off the critical path that keeps you up‐to‐date on the codebase while impacting business across Engineering, QA, and Sales.
Assist in building the growing team in Europe, building skills, and creating an environment that empowers engineers to do their best work consistently.
Qualifications & Desired Traits
You are passionate about both management and being technical, able to hold in‑depth conversations across infra, backend, and frontend.
You enjoy management problems, driving people to be their best, giving difficult feedback, and building systems that make this easier.
You hold your team to a high standard and do not shy away from details and feedback, even to the best folks on your team.
You are an excellent and empathetic communicator capable of navigating beliefs and opinions while persuading teams to adopt new ways of working.
You know what exceptional engineers look like, can recruit and grow them, and have a nuanced view of what makes engineers thrive.
You’s are interested in building a team that can make the best decisions without you calling the shots.
You thrive in high‑trust, high‑autonomy environments and are comfortable wearing multiple hats.
You do not enjoy coding or cannot find time to stay up‑to‑date on technology.
You have entered management solely for the growth path.
You want to make all product decisions instead of empowering your team.
You are happy with a team of engineers that may be early‑career, mid‑career, or lack autonomy.
You think that at some size, retailers must impose standard processes like sprint planning or in‑depth specs and are opposed to such constraints.
