Software Developer C++ - Trieste/Remote (EU)

We are looking for a skilled Mid–Senior C++ Developer to join our team in Trieste. You’ll work on building high-performance Windows desktop applications focused on image and video processing for digital forensics, collaborating closely with QA and international product teams.
Throughout your onboarding, senior developers will mentor and support you, helping you evolve into a fully autonomous contributor.
We offer flexible engagement models: an employee contract (initially 6 months fixed-term with a view to permanent hire) for candidates based in Italy, or an independent contractor/freelance agreement for EU-based remote talent. Valid EU work authorization is required.
Main Responsibilities
- Add new features to our products' codebase (Windows-based desktop applications) and contribute to the development of new products.
- Operate at every layer of the application, from the graphical interface down to the algorithmic core.
- Correct bugs and improve existing features in the products.
- Contribute to improving code quality and documentation, and add new automated tests to our test suite.
- Drive and deliver large refactors of legacy C++ systems to reduce complexity, eliminate brittle code paths, and enable faster feature development.
Requirements
- BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technologies, or related fields.
- At least 3-5+ years of professional experience in software development.
- Advanced proficiency in C++, preferably for desktop applications.
- Strong familiarity with the Windows toolchain and ecosystem: MSVC, Visual Studio debugging/profiling, CMake, and packaging/deployment (MSI installer creation).
- Detail-oriented mindset with strong written communication skills.
- Full professional proficiency in English.
- Must be authorized to work in Italy or currently residing in the EU as a registered self-employed professional/independent contractor.
Preferred
- Knowledge of the Italian language or other additional languages.
- Experience with the libraries wx Widgets, OpenCV, and FFmpeg.
- Knowledge of Windows APIs.
- Experience with GPU development.
- Knowledge of image processing basics.
- Knowledge of video codecs.
- Experience in the digital forensics field (e.g., as a forensic image and video analyst, law enforcement, military, or forensic expert).

Contractual Details
- Location: Trieste (Area Science Park Padriciano) – on-site or hybrid within Italy, or Full-Remote within the EU.
- Contract type: Employment (Italy): employee contract (Fixed-Term 6 months with a view to permanent hire, Full-Time, CCNL Metalmeccanica Industria). Contractor (EU): independent contractor/freelance agreement.
- Compensation range: Employment (Italy): € 35,000 - € 46,000 GROSS/year – commensurate with professional experience, technical and soft skills relevant to the role. Contractor (EU): competitive hourly or daily rate aligned with experience and expected deliverables.
