Graduate Mechanical Engineer

Reports To: Project Manager / Lead Mechanical Engineer
Programme: Kirby Group Engineering Graduate Programme (24 Months)
The Kirby Group Engineering Graduate Programme The Kirby Group Engineering Graduate Programme is a structured 24‑month programme designed to develop high‑potential graduates into future technical and project leaders. Graduates gain hands‑on experience across prestigious and complex projects, supported by structured mentoring, professional development and exposure to multidisciplinary teams.
Role Purpose The Graduate Mechanical Engineer will support the design, installation and delivery of mechanical building services across construction projects, ensuring works are completed in line with approved designs, specifications, quality standards and safety requirements.
The role provides progressive responsibility across design, site supervision and project support functions.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Assist in the design and development of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing and piping.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, schedules and technical specifications.
- Carry out load calculations and system sizing.
- Analyse technical information and support design improvements and value engineering.
- Support BIM and multidisciplinary design coordination.
Site Supervision & Engineering Support
- Attend site to monitor mechanical installations and verify compliance with design and industry standards.
- Inspect installations and assist with testing and commissioning activities.
- Support the resolution of technical issues in collaboration with subcontractors and site teams.
- Participate in site walks and produce snag lists.
Project & Programme Support
- Assist with project planning, scheduling and sequencing of mechanical works.
- Track progress and identify potential risks or constraints.
- Support the preparation of project reports and documentation.
- Develop an understanding of how commissioning activities integrate with overall project programmes.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Comply with project‑specific HSE plans and company safety procedures.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and identify potential hazards.
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with statutory and company regulations.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with project managers,
engineers, subcontractors and clients.
- Build strong working relationships within multidisciplinary teams.
- Represent Kirby Group Engineering in a professional and positive manner.
Learning & Development
- Actively participate in the Graduate Programme, mentoring and CPD activities.
- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development and career progression.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Level 8 Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- Proficiency or exposure to AutoCAD, Revit or BIM tools.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Interest in the construction and MEP sector.
- Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
