The American University of Rome (AUR) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in Art History, beginning in Fall 2027. AUR's BA in Art History combines the critical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches of an American liberal arts education with exceptional opportunities for direct engagement with art, architecture, museums, collections, archives, and cultural institutions throughout Rome.
We seek an accomplished scholar-teacher whose research and teaching will expand the intellectual, methodological, and geographic scope of the Art History program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth and visibility of the program, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, mentorship, and academic citizenship.
Preferred areas of specialization include early modern, modern, and contemporary art; global art history; museum and curatorial studies; collecting, provenance, and the art market; visual and material culture; and architectural history.
We also welcome candidates whose teaching and research build productive connections between Art History and Fine Arts, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture and encouraging collaboration across programs, museums, collections, and other cultural institutions.
Candidates should be prepared to teach foundational Art History courses as well as upper-level courses in their areas of expertise.
