THE ROLE
The candidate will contribute to functional verification, software validation, and technical analysis activities for embedded components dedicated to the boot path, cryptographic cores, and related security mechanisms, with the goal of ensuring functional correctness, robustness of system behavior, and compliance with project requirements.
The person will work closely with development, architecture, and validation teams, supporting the definition of test cases, execution of test campaigns, analysis of results, and debugging of potential anomalies on microcontroller targets and laboratory platforms.
The candidate will therefore be responsible for:
- designing, implementing,
and executing functional verification activities on embedded software/firmware;
- validating boot sequence flows, including aspects of secure boot, authentication, integrity checks, and startup controls;
- verifying the behavior of cryptographic cores and security support functionalities;
- developing test scripts and automation in Python and support components in C;
- carrying out debugging activities on microcontrollers, analyzing registers, traces, signals, and execution states;
- using laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debug probes, and equivalent tools;
- collecting technical evidence and contributing to the traceability of bugs, issues, and nonconformities;
- supporting the preparation of validation reports, technical notes, and test documentation;
- interacting with cross-functional teams to clarify requirements, reproduce issues, and verify fixes;
- contributing to validation activities in compliance with the processes and constraints required by ISO 26262.
POSSIBLE EXTENSION TOWARD CYBERSECURITY
Over time, the scope of activities may also extend to embedded cybersecurity aspects, including for example:
- vulnerability analysis in startup flows and authentication processes;
- support for validation of secure boot, firmware protection, key management, and integrity protection mechanisms;
- verification of requirements related to hardening, trust chain, and resistance to software/hardware attacks;
- contribution to assessment activities on security functionalities and compliance with security by design requirements;
- collaboration in defining tests aimed at detecting anomalous behavior or tampering attempts;
- possible involvement in initiatives related to standards, best practices, or cybersecurity frameworks for embedded systems.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Telecommunications, or related disciplines;
- Solid background in embedded systems, microcontroller architecture, firmware, and low-level debugging;
- Good knowledge of Python for test automation and data analysis;
- Good knowledge of C for understanding and analyzing software/firmware behavior;
- Experience using oscilloscopes, debug probes, logic analyzers, and laboratory instrumentation;
- Ability to perform technical debugging on embedded targets, also through analysis of signals, timing, and machine states;
- Familiarity with concepts such as secure boot, applied cryptography, firmware integrity, and trust chain;
- Knowledge of ISO 26262 and the related development, verification, and validation process in the context of safety-critical systems;
- Interest in, or preliminary knowledge of, embedded cybersecurity and hardware/software security topics;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and technical documentation capability;
- Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
