Your role
We are looking to recruit a Cloud Systems Analyst to work as a member of the Cloud Systems team in support of activities in all aspects related to the evolution, release, and deployment of our on-premises OpenStack and Proxmox Cloud environments.
ECMWF provides high quality on-premises Cloud Computing services to its Member States and internal users by providing state-of-the‑art compute and object storage resources available in close proximity to the meteorological data archive and the existing HPC facilities.
The cloud services are based on two platforms, the Common Cloud Infrastructure (CCI) and the MCLOUD, both supported 24x7.
The CCI service consists of two OpenStack Clusters with approximately ten-thousand cores and two CEPH storage clusters of approximately six petabytes each. On these systems ECMWF runs a number of operational services such as the European Weather Cloud (http://europeanweather.cloud) and the new version of the Copernicus Data Stores (http://cds.climate.copernicus.eu) as well as many other internal and external projects.
The MCLOUD holds the virtual machines and processes that are critical to the delivery of our daily weather forecasts. The service is in the later stage of being migrated from vSphere to five Proxmox clusters.
Both platforms provide services for a growing number of AI ecosystems, like Anemoi, MLflow services, AIFS Assistant, and several Member States and internal AI workloads.
ECMWF is now looking for a qualified Cloud Systems Analyst to help support the Cloud platforms that power both services. ECMWF recognises that the role requires a broad skill set and offers training to help applicants develop any missing skills.
Your responsibilities
You will:
- Assist with the platform migration from vSphere to Proxmox
- Monitor, manage and optimize our on-premises Cloud solutions based on Proxmox and OpenStack, including CEPH and virtual networking, and optimize performance
- Collaborate with other sections and departments at ECMWF to ensure proper integration with our Cloud environments
- Use automation and AI tools to efficiently manage our Cloud environments
- Liaise with vendors, external partners and provide support to users for the collaborative support of our Clouds
- Work closely with Development teams in identifying and finding solutions to problems
- Participate in a 24/7 on‑call system
What we are looking for
You will bring:
- Ability to communicate with and understand complex requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, listening to and respecting the views of others
- Good analytical and problem‑solving skills with a proactive approach
- An interest in identifying, investigating and resolving technical problems
- The ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision
- The flexibility to adapt to changing organisational priorities and user needs
- Dedication and enthusiasm to work in a small team
Your profile
Education & Experience
- University degree,
or equivalent, in a discipline related to IT, science or mathematics
- Strong background in Linux based systems
- Strong background in Proxmox, OpenStack, Ceph and/or other Cloud technologies is a strong requirement with demonstratable experience
- Experience with vSphere would be advantageous
- Experience in configuring and scripting automation tools such as Ansible and Terraform. Experience with monitoring/visualising stacks like ELK, Grafana, Prometheus/InfluxDB, Fluentd or similar would be advantageous
- Understand the complexities of the underlying IP fabric and related technologies which power a high bandwidth system would be advantageous
- Understanding and deploying Kubernetes would be an asset. Experience with Veeam Backup and Recovery would be advantageous
- Basic experience running AI/ML workloads locally or on cloud platforms, like Ollama or LMStudio, GPU‑enabled services, or managed AI platforms, including familiarity with MCP for managing infrastructure, would be advantageous
Knowledge & Skills
- Training opportunities are available to support the development of needed skills
- Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English. A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) is an advantage but not required
If you feel that you have the motivation and many of the skills for this role but don't meet precisely all of the criteria listed above, we still encourage you to apply.
