DAY 4 NIGHT PRODUCTIONS
Technical Lighting Artist
Location: Full Remote (EU/Italy preferred)
Core collaboration hours: 09:00–18:00 CET/CEST (Italian time)
Position Type: Freelance
Project: You’ll help drive delivery on Bradley the Badger, our upcoming action‑adventure title.
About the Studio
We’re an independent game studio building Bradley the Badger, a systems‑driven action‑adventure game. Our cross‑disciplinary team (design, art, animation, programming, audio) works in tight, iterative loops, combining rapid prototyping with milestone‑driven planning. We value ownership, clarity, and respectful candor: raise risks early, propose solutions, learn fast, and celebrate wins together.
As an experienced Technical Lighting Artist, you will be responsible for developing and implementing high-quality, production-ready lighting solutions that support the visual identity, gameplay readability, and atmosphere for Bradley the Badger. You will help bring the game’s environments to life through carefully crafted lighting, color composition, and visual hierarchy, balancing artistic quality with gameplay needs and real-time performance constraints, with a particular focus on optimization for lower-end platforms
You will collaborate closely with the Art Director, Level Artists, Level Designers, Technical Artists, and Programmers to transform environments and level design blockouts, with artistic intentions, into polished, performant in-game experiences. Your work will combine a strong artistic eye with technical expertise in Unreal Engine’s lighting systems, lightmap baking, profiling, and optimization workflows to ensure that each environment supports exploration, combat, traversal, and narrative goals within a systems-driven action-adventure experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and refine high-quality, production-ready lighting across game environments, from initial blockouts through final in-game implementation.
- Translate artistic direction and level design intentions into effective lighting solutions that enhance atmosphere, composition, environmental storytelling, and gameplay readability.
- Establish and maintain consistent lighting and color composition across levels, ensuring a cohesive visual identity throughout the game.
- Use lighting, shadows, contrast, color, and visual hierarchy to guide players naturally through environments, highlight important landmarks, and support navigation, exploration, combat, and traversal.
- Collaborate closely with level designers and environment artists to ensure lighting supports gameplay flow, player guidance, spatial awareness, and the intended experience of each location.
- Work with the Art Director and art team to define and maintain lighting standards, visual targets, and best practices across the project.
- Implement and optimize real-time lighting solutions in Unreal Engine, including baked lighting, lightmaps, Lightmass settings, post-process volumes, and related rendering workflows.
- Profile, troubleshoot, and optimize lighting performance, memory usage, and rendering costs, with a particular focus on meeting the technical requirements of lower-end platforms.
- Manage lightmap resolution, density, UV requirements, and baking workflows across environments to ensure efficient resource usage and consistent visual quality throughout the project.
- Use Unreal Engine profiling and debugging tools, including Unreal Insights, to identify performance bottlenecks and support data-driven optimization decisions.
- Develop and maintain Blueprints and Editor Utility Widgets to automate repetitive tasks, improve lighting workflows, and streamline production processes.
- Collaborate with technical artists and programmers to troubleshoot rendering and lighting issues, improve pipeline efficiency, and ensure robust integration within the game.
- Contribute to the development and documentation of lighting pipelines, optimization guidelines, and production best practices.
- Provide constructive feedback and technical guidance to other team members when needed.
- Work with directors and production teams to estimate, prioritize, and deliver tasks according to project milestones and performance requirements.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a Technical Lighting Artist or similar role in the gaming industry, preferably on low end platforms.
- Strong working knowledge of Unreal Engine, including lighting, performance optimization, materials, lightmap baking and optimization workflows
- Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality lighting art, color composition.
- Strong understanding of composition, scale, player guidance, environmental storytelling, lighting, color, and visual hierarchy with usage of post process volumes, lightmass tools.
- Experience working from level design blockouts preserving gameplay intentions with lighting solutions.
- Proficiency in profiling in Unreal with Unreal Insights and lightmaps management skills over the entire project needs.
- Knowledge of blueprints and Editor Utility Widjets
- High collaboration skills and proficiency in troubleshooting
- Experience in scalability process
- Strong awareness of real-time performance constraints and optimization techniques for lighting.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with art, design, and technical teams in an iterative production environment.
- Ability to work independently and proactively in a fully remote environment.
- Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Italian is preferred.
What we offer:
- A fully remote work environment that promotes flexibility and work-life balance.
- Opportunities for professional growth and development within the company.
- A collaborative and inclusive team culture that values creativity and innovation.
