Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri
PhD/Postdoc Position - Statistical / Causal Inference – DEEP TRIAL
Host Institution
Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research (IRCCS) – Clinical Data Science Laboratory, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano and the DEEP TRIAL consortium.
Location: Via Gian Battista Camozzi, 3 - 24020 Ranica (BG), Italy
Research Project
This position is funded within the Italian Ministry of Health ‘Ricerca Finalizzata 2024’ project (RF‑2024‑12380419 – DEEP TRIAL), a 3‑year research program focused on the development of a platform for Target Trial Emulation (TTE) using real‑world data. The project aims to estimate treatment effects in critically ill patients using large-scale EHR data, addressing key clinical questions in intensive care.
Research Environment
The Clinical Data Science Laboratory at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research (IRCCS) coordinates the Italian Group for the Evaluation of Interventions in Intensive Care (GiViTI), one of the largest intensive care research networks in the world.
The laboratory collects, integrates, and analyzes high-quality clinical data from approximately 250 Intensive Care Units across Italy and other European countries. Its mission is to support clinicians and researchers in improving patient outcomes by enabling data-driven decision-making and optimizing the use of available healthcare resources.
The research environment is highly multidisciplinary, integrating expertise in clinical medicine, engineering, statistics, and data science.
This multidisciplinary approach is further strengthened by ongoing national and international collaborations with leading institutions, including:
- Ospedale Niguarda (Milan), a reference center for advanced clinical care
- University of Bari, with strong expertise in clinical and quantitative research
- Politecnico di Milano (Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering – DEIB)
- University of Amsterdam (Medical Informatics, Amsterdam UMC)
These collaborations provide a unique environment in which candidates will interact with clinicians, engineers, and methodological experts, fostering strong integration between theoretical development, engineering solutions, and real-world clinical applications.
The work will primarily be carried out at the company’s premises, with the possibility of working remotely up to two days per week. During the initial onboarding and training period, a more frequent presence in the office will be required to facilitate the new employee’s integration, training, and familiarisation with the company’s processes and working methods.
