AI Software Engineer - Freelance
Who we are
Bitrock is a high-end consulting and system integration company, strongly committed to offering cutting-edge and innovative solutions. Our tailored consulting services enable our clients to preserve the value of legacy investments while migrating to more efficient systems and infrastructure. We take a holistic approach to technology: we consider each system in its totality, as a set of interconnected elements that work together to meet business needs.
We thrive on overcoming challenges to help our clients reach their goals, by supporting them in the following areas: Data, AI & ML Engineering; Back-end Engineering, Platform Engineering, Front-end Engineering, Product Design & UX Engineering, Mobile App Development, Quality Assurance, FinOps, Governance. The effectiveness of our solutions also stems from partnerships with key technology vendors, like HashiCorp, Confluent, Lightbend, Databricks, and Meterian.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a AI Software Engineer to drive the evolution and adoption of a proprietary agentic development framework for an industry-leading global enterprise client.
This framework is an internal, local-first phased pipeline (setup, legacy system analysis, backlog, coding, QA) orchestrating agentic AI coding assistants with rigorous human-in-the-loop oversight. Your mission will not be standard application development: you will own the engine itself—maintaining the core architecture, optimizing prompt and skill instructions, managing developer telemetry, and championing best-in-class agentic SDLC practices across engineering teams.
Role Overview
You will be the technical authority for the agentic framework. You will sit at the intersection of modern software engineering, developer tooling,
and context engineering. You will enhance core capabilities (hooks, subagents, MCP, local dashboards), measure and reduce token consumption, and partner closely with engineering teams to turn AI-assisted workflows into a seamless, high-trust daily standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Framework Ownership & Evolution: Maintain and evolve the agentic pipeline architecture, phases, custom skills, hooks, and runtime configurations.
- Core Tooling & Testing: Develop and stabilize underlying platform components, eliminating fragile paths through rigorous automated testing
- Context Engineering & Telemetry: Optimize and compress prompt contexts and stage contracts to reduce token overhead, validating impact via telemetry and output quality benchmarks.
- Modularization & Rollout Strategy: Deconstruct the framework into standalone, reusable modules to facilitate gradual, high-value adoption across different development teams.
- Internal Advocacy & Mentorship: Act as the pragmatic technical reference for engineers, helping teams navigate transition friction and master agentic coding workflows.
Required Skills
Must-Have:
- Engineering Foundation: professional software development experience, with outstanding ability to read, navigate, and refactor complex legacy/brownfield codebases.
- Deep Agentic Coding Internals: Daily,
advanced mastery of agentic coding tools—specifically Claude Code internals (skills, custom commands, hook lifecycles, configuration layering, subagents, MCP, context window orchestration).
- JavaScript/TypeScript & Node.js: Proven experience building developer tools/scripts on modern Node (Node 22), Vite, and test frameworks (node:test, Playwright).
- Modern Python: Hands-on proficiency with modern Python (3.12+) managed via uv, alongside pytest.
- Systems & VCS: Advanced Git proficiency (submodules, symlinks, worktrees) and portable shell scripting across macOS, Linux, and WSL.
- Collaboration & Mindset: Strong autonomy, pragmatic empathy to engage with skeptical developers, fluent Italian, and proficient technical English. Practical knowledge of Jira and Confluence workflows.
Nice-to-Have:
- Familiarity with GitHub Copilot agentic features (prompt files, agent modes, hooks).
- Experience with code knowledge graphs (Graphify, tree-sitter) and OpenTelemetry instrumentation.
- Integration experience with Atlassian (Jira/Confluence APIs) and GitHub (REST/GraphQL, Projects v2).
- Background in spec-driven development, Architectural Decision Records (ADRs), or technical training/mentoring within enterprise contexts.
Contract Details
- Start Date: Immediate / ASAP
- Duration: Minimum 6-month contract
- Location: Hybrid (Mainly remote, with on-site presence at the client’s Milan offices up to 1–2 days per week, only when required)
Recruitment process
Our recruitment process has 3 stages:
1. First discovery short interview with our HR team
2. Technical interview with our Team Leaders
3. Final interview with our Client
